Vehicle Keyfob Reconnaissance & Attacks Speaker: Samy Kamkar

In this talk I’ll share the exciting details on researching and creating attack tools to perform automated wireless keyfob reconnaissance and demonstrate wirelessly unlocking and starting cars. This will focus primarily on using low cost tools, investigating proprietary chips and protocols (no datasheets available), and creating new tools to aid in research.

I’ll describe how vehicles communicate with keyfobs and vice versa (LF & UHF), along with the details of an entirely new device I’ve developed that can automatically detect the makes and models of keyfobs nearby. Once the keyfobs have been detected, the attacker can swipe to choose a vehicle, and the device can wirelessly unlock & start the ignition once a second attacker is nearby the vehicle. It’s like Tinder, but for cars.

Samy Kamkar is an independent security researcher, best known for creating The MySpace worm, the fastest spreading virus of all time. His open source software, hardware and research highlights the insecurities and privacy implications in every day technologies, from the Evercookie which produces virtually immutable respawning cookies, to SkyJack, a drone that wirelessly hijacks and autonomously controls other drones. His work has been cited by the NSA, triggered hearings on Capitol Hill, and has been the basis for security advancements across many browsers, smartphones, and other technologies.
